Masjid al-Ghamama: The Mosque of the Cloud

Where the Prophet (ﷺ) Prayed for Rain

Just a short walk from the southwestern gates of Masjid an-Nabawi stands the beautiful and historically rich Masjid al-Ghamama. Though modest in size compared to the Prophet’s Mosque, its significance is immense. This was the original outdoor prayer area (musalla) where the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself led the blessed prayers of Eid and the special prayer for rain (Salat al-Istisqa). Its story is one of miracles, communal worship, and divine mercy.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A Historical Landmark

Masjid al-Ghamama is preserved primarily as a historical and architectural treasure. Please be aware that it is not typically open for the five daily prayers, as all congregations are now held in the vast Masjid an-Nabawi next to it. The experience is one of admiring the mosque from the outside plaza and reflecting on the incredible events that took place on its grounds.

The Spiritual Significance: A Place of Miracles and Sunnah

For much of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) time in Madinah, this open space served as the primary location for major congregational prayers that were preferred to be held outdoors.

  1. The Musalla for Eid Prayers

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) established the Sunnah of performing the Eid prayers in an open area, and this was the chosen spot. The very first Eid al-Fitr prayer in Islamic history, in the 2nd year of Hijrah, was led by the Prophet (ﷺ) on this blessed ground. Imagine the joy of the companions celebrating Eid with their beloved Prophet right here.

  2. The Miracle of the Cloud (Ghamama)

The mosque derives its name from a beautiful miracle. “Ghamama” means “cloud.” It is narrated that during a time of drought, the Prophet (ﷺ) led the community in the prayer for rain (Salat al-Istisqa) at this location. In response to his heartfelt supplication, Allah (SWT) sent a cloud that brought blessed, saving rain to the city of Madinah. Other narrations mention that a cloud would often appear to provide shade for the Prophet (ﷺ) as he prayed here.

  3. The Funeral Prayer for a Righteous King

This site also witnessed a unique and significant event. It was here that the Prophet (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer in absentia (Salat al-Gha’ib) for Najashi, the just and righteous Christian King of Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia), who had given refuge to the first Muslim migrants.

Exploring the Site: The Experience

Distinctive Architecture

The current structure is a beautifully preserved example of Ottoman-era design, built during the reign of Sultan Abdul Majid I. Its multiple small domes create a unique and elegant silhouette against the Madinah sky.

A Historic Plaza

Masjid al-Ghamama is situated in a plaza that contains other small, historic mosques, such as Masjid Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (RA). Viewing them together gives a sense of the historical landscape of old Madinah.

A Moment of Reflection

Standing in the plaza, one can close their eyes and visualize the Prophet (ﷺ) leading thousands of companions. It is a place to reflect on the mercy of Allah, the power of Dua, and the beautiful traditions established by our Prophet (ﷺ).

Practical Information and Logistics

  • Location: Located in the open plaza just southwest of Masjid an-Nabawi, a very short walk from gates 5 and 6.
  • Travel: No vehicle is required. It is easily accessible on foot for anyone visiting the Prophet’s Mosque.
  • Best Time to View: The mosque can be admired at any time. It is particularly beautiful at night when it is tastefully illuminated.
