Masjid Jummah (The Friday Mosque)
Masjid Jummah: The Site of the First Friday Prayer in Islam
Located between Masjid Quba and Masjid an-Nabawi, Masjid Jummah marks a defining moment in Islamic history. During his Hijrah (Migration) from Makkah to Madinah, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) paused at this very spot and led the first-ever Jummah (Friday) prayer, establishing a tradition that continues to unite Muslims worldwide each week.
Though humble in appearance, the mosque’s significance is immense; it commemorates the Prophet’s (ﷺ) first sermon in Madinah and the formal beginning of congregational worship in Islam.
A visit to Masjid Jummah offers a serene and deeply spiritual experience, allowing pilgrims to stand where the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) once gathered his companions and initiated one of the faith’s most sacred practices.

IMPORTANT NOTE: An Active and Accessible Mosque
Masjid Jummah is a fully functioning modern mosque where all daily prayers, including a vibrant weekly Jummah prayer, are held. It is a popular and spiritually essential Ziyarat stop, conveniently located on the route from Masjid Quba, making it a logical part of any tour of Madinah’s holy sites.
The story of Masjid Jummah is a beautiful chapter in the story of the Hijrah. After establishing the first mosque in Islam at Quba and staying there for several days, the Prophet (ﷺ) set out on a Friday to enter the main city of Madinah.
The Journey from Quba
As he journeyed with his companions, the time for the noon prayer arrived. They were in the valley of Wadi Ranuna, an area inhabited by the tribe of Banu Salim ibn Auf.
The First Sermon and Prayer
The Prophet (ﷺ) halted, gathered approximately one hundred Muslims who were present, and delivered the first-ever Khutbah (Friday sermon). Following the sermon, he led them in two Rakat, establishing the inaugural Jummah prayer.
A Foundation for the Ummah
Every single Jummah prayer offered across the globe for over fourteen centuries has its roots in the profound act of worship that took place on this very piece of land. It signifies the formal establishment of the weekly Islamic congregation.
This mosque is also known by other historical names, including Masjid al-Wadi (The Mosque of the Valley).
Exploring the Site: The Experience

Modern and Serene ArchitectureThe current building is a beautiful and well-maintained mosque with an elegant single dome and minaret. Its clean, bright interior provides a peaceful and serene atmosphere for prayer and reflection.
An Act of ConnectionThe primary experience for a visitor is to enter the mosque and offer two Rakat of Nafl prayer (such as Tahiyyatul Masjid – the prayer for “greeting the mosque”).
A Moment of ReflectionAs you pray, take a moment to reflect on the immense historical weight of your location. You are standing where the first Khutbah was heard and the first congregational Ameen of a Jummah prayer was uttered. It is a decisive moment to appreciate this weekly gift from Allah (SWT).
