The Dawn of Revelation: A Spiritual Journey to the Cave of Hira
Jabal Al-Noor, meaning the “Mountain of Light,” holds a place of unparalleled significance in the history of Islam. It is not just a mountain; it is the sacred location where the very first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed by Allah (SWT) to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
Located approximately 5 kilometers northeast of Masjid Al-Haram, this mountain houses the Cave of Hira (Ghar-e-Hira). Before his Prophethood, the Prophet (PBUH) frequently retreated to this cave, seeking solitude, contemplation (Tafakkur), and worship. A visit here offers pilgrims a unique opportunity to connect deeply with the beginnings of Islam and walk in the footsteps of the Prophet (PBUH).
The Spiritual Significance: Where Heaven Met Earth
The defining moment of Jabal Al-Noor occurred during the month of Ramadan when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was 40 years old. While meditating within the Cave of Hira, the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) appeared before him and commanded him to “Read!” (Iqra).
This event marked the beginning of the divine revelation, which continued over the next 23 years. The first verses revealed were the beginning of Surah Al-Alaq:
“Read in the name of your Lord who created – Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous – Who taught by the pen – Taught man that which he knew not.” (Quran 96:1-5)
A Note on Rituals
It is important for pilgrims to understand that climbing Jabal Al-Noor or entering the Cave of Hira is not a required ritual of Hajj or Umrah. It is a virtuous act and a historical Ziyarat, but your pilgrimage is complete without it. The intention should be to reflect on the history of Islam and the sacrifices of the Prophet (PBUH), not to risk one’s health if physically unable.
The Journey: What to Expect
A visit to the Cave of Hira involves two parts: the journey to the base of the mountain, and the climb to the cave itself.

- Travel Time from Haram: 15-25 minutes, depending on traffic.
- Service: We can arrange pickups at any time, including very early morning for those wishing to climb before Fajr.
2. The Climb: A Test of Endurance and Devotion
The climb to the Cave of Hira is physically demanding and should not be underestimated.
- Mountain Height: Approximately 642 meters (2,100 feet).
- The Path: The route consists of steep, unevenly carved stone steps (estimated between 1,200 to 1,750 steps) and rocky pathways. It remains a rugged hike.
- Difficulty Level: High. This is a strenuous hike, not a casual walk.
- Duration of Climb (One Way): Very Fit: 45 minutes to 1 hour.
- Average Fitness: 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours.
- Slower Pace/Crowded: Up to 2 hours.
- The Descent: Coming down can be challenging on the knees. Allow 45-60 minutes.
We strongly advise pilgrims with heart conditions, respiratory issues, severe knee or back problems, or those who are not accustomed to strenuous activity to avoid the climb.
The Cave of Hira (Ghar-e-Hira)
The Cave of Hira is not located at the very peak of the mountain but slightly below it. You will need to navigate through a narrow passage between boulders to reach the entrance.
- Size: The cave is surprisingly small and humble, approximately 3.5 meters (12 feet) long and 1.5 meters (5 feet) wide.
- Capacity: There is barely enough room for two people to pray comfortably at one time (or 4-5 people sitting).
- The View: The opening of the cave faces directly towards the Kaaba in Masjid Al-Haram.
- The Experience: The area around the cave is often crowded, especially during Hajj and Ramadan. Pilgrims wait patiently (Sabr is essential) for their turn to enter the cave, offer two Rakat Nafl prayers, and make Dua.
The Best Time to Visit Jabal Al-Noor
Choosing the right time is crucial due to the intense heat of Makkah.
Highly Recommended: Pre-Dawn (Before Fajr)
Why: This is the ideal time. The weather is coolest, and the atmosphere is serene. Climbing in the dark allows you to witness the spectacular sunrise over Makkah. Many pilgrims aim to pray Fajr near the summit. Note: You must bring a good flashlight or headlamp.
Recommended: Late Afternoon (After Asr)
Why: The heat begins to subside, giving you enough daylight for the ascent. You may descend around Maghrib.
Strongly Discouraged: Midday (10 AM to 4 PM)
Why: The direct sunlight and extreme heat make the climb exhausting and dangerous, significantly increasing the risk of dehydration and heatstroke.
