Jabal Al-Noor (The Mountain of Light) & The Cave of Hira (Ghar-e-Hira)
The Dawn of Revelation: A Spiritual Journey to the Cave of Hira
Jabal Al-Noor, meaning the “Mountain of Light,” holds a place of unparalleled significance in the history of Islam. It is not just a mountain; it is the sacred location where the very first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed by Allah (SWT) to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
Located approximately 5 kilometers northeast of Masjid Al-Haram, this mountain houses the Cave of Hira (Ghar-e-Hira). Before his Prophethood, the Prophet (PBUH) frequently retreated to this cave to seek solitude, contemplation (Tafakkur), and worship.
A visit here offers pilgrims a unique opportunity to connect deeply with the beginnings of Islam and walk in the footsteps of the Prophet (PBUH).

The Spiritual Significance:
Where Heaven Met Earth

This event marked the beginning of the divine revelation, which continued over the next 23 years. The first verses revealed were the beginning of Surah Al-Alaq:
“Read in the name of your Lord who created – Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous – Who taught by the pen – Taught man that which he knew not.”
(Quran 96:1-5)
A Note on Rituals
Pilgrims need to understand that climbing Jabal Al-Noor or entering the Cave of Hira is not a required ritual of Hajj or Umrah. It is a virtuous act and a historical Ziyarat, but your pilgrimage is complete without it. The intention should be to reflect on the history of Islam and the sacrifices of the Prophet (PBUH), not to risk one’s health if physically unable.

The Best Time to Visit Jabal Al-Noor
Highly Recommended: Pre-Dawn (Before Fajr)Why: This is the ideal time. The weather is coolest, and the atmosphere is serene. Climbing in the dark allows you to witness the spectacular sunrise over Makkah. Many pilgrims aim to pray Fajr near the summit. Note: You must bring a good flashlight or headlamp.
Recommended: Late Afternoon (After Asr)Why: The heat begins to subside, giving you enough daylight for the ascent. You may descend around Maghrib.
Strongly Discouraged: Midday (10 AM to 4 PM)Why: The direct sunlight and extreme heat make the climb exhausting and dangerous, significantly increasing the risk of dehydration and heatstroke.
